Meet Carla, Apprentice Extraordinaire!

Folks, we are excited to introduce you to our newest Sprout team member, Carla Montrond Correia.  Carla is incredibly talented, passionate, intelligent, and accomplished, and she brings great perspective to the Sprout team.  She is dedicated to healthy living, and she is committing her professional life to sharing her knowledge and passion about holistic health.  She is currently a Candidate for a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, and she joins us this summer while she’s on break from medical school.

Smart, passionate, health-loving Carla, Apprentice Extraordinaire!

Originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, Carla decided to join Sprout because of her passion for organic food and farming.  Her interest in the subject was kindled when she visited her parent’s native country, Cape Verde, in the summer of 2011. Spending time in the Natural Park with her family literally brought her back to her roots. There she saw how her parents grew up in an agricultural lifestyle that resembled permaculture. They took care of the earth so the earth could provide for them.  This experience taught Carla that growing your own food not only provides the most nutrients, but also helps you learn about and see where your food comes from. Carla loves to learn and values education because she believes that knowledge is power. For that reason and many more, Carla has an extensive educational background. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from University of Saint Joseph, and a Master of Science in Complementary and Alternative Medicine from Georgetown University.  Carla just finished her first year of Naturopathic Medical School at University of Bridgeport, where she is learning about holistic medicine that focuses on the health and wellness of the mind, body, and spirit.  She believes that nutrition is a major factor in healthcare, and she follows Hippocrates’ wise words that “food should be your medicine and medicine should be your food.”  She says, “Food choices either bring you closer to health or closer to disease, and that’s why I strongly believe in educating people about healthy food options, including organic gardening.” In her spare time, Carla enjoys painting, yoga, running, and trying new recipes.   And she’s excited to spend her summer with Sprout, putting her studies into practice.  She says,”I’m excited to learn about growing organic foods in an urban setting.  Being self-sustaining and eating local is a possibility for anyone!” Carla has big plans for her future: She plans to open up her own practice to educate people about ways to take their health into their own hands, and she also aspires to start a non-profit that provides healthcare to those in need.  We have no doubt she’s going to be wildly successful in her ventures, and we’re thrilled she’s chosen to include Sprout as part of her path!
